It ended Italy 0 Portugal 0 so instead it is the European champions who go through to the finals stage. Emerson Palmieri remained on the Italian bench.
It was a better Saturday for Kenneth Omeruo and Nigeria who secured their place in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament with a 1-1 draw away to South Africa.
KENNETH OMERUO PLAYING FOR NIGERIA
The defender, who is currently on loan in Spain at Leganes, and his international team-mates went ahead with the aid of an early own-goal. The home side drew level in Johannesburg midway through the first half. Nigeria have made it to the finals, which will be held in Cameroon in June and July, with a game to spare.
At junior level back in Europe, Marc Guehi, Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi all started as England Under-19s made it two wins out of two at the start of their qualification campaign for the next European Championships for their age group. They beat Iceland 3-1 with Hudson-Odoi setting up the opening goal. Tariq Lamptey and George McEachran were unused subs.
Billy Gilmour scored for the second match running in the current round of fixtures when he helped Scotland Under-19s to a 5-0 win over San Marino. Like England, Scotland top their qualification group with six points out of six.
For England Under-18s in a game against Republic of Ireland held in Spain, Clinton Mola came on in the second half with his side trailing 1-0, but the Young Lions recovered to win 3-1. Faustino Anjorin remained on the bench.
